How Often Should You Get a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are one of the most effective ways to refresh the skin, improve texture, and target concerns like acne, pigmentation, and early signs of aging. The most common question we hear is: how often should you actually get one?

Understanding peels and their benefits

A chemical peel is a professional exfoliation treatment that removes the outermost layers of the skin using a controlled solution. As the top layer sheds, healthier-looking skin comes through underneath. Peels can help with:

  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Dark spots, hyperpigmentation, uneven tone
  • Fine lines and early aging
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rough or dull texture

At Kendall Esthetics we use The Derma Peel — a medium-depth, medical-grade option formulated with Glutathione, an antioxidant that supports brightness. No special pre-treatment is required, though starting medical-grade skincare a few weeks ahead can enhance results.

What determines the right frequency

Skin type

Oily or acne-prone skin often tolerates more frequent peels. Sensitive or dry skin typically needs more time between sessions to avoid irritation.

Skin concerns

Active acne, discoloration, or scarring usually benefit from a structured series — often spaced every three to four weeks to maintain momentum. Anti-aging maintenance is typically less frequent.

Depth of peel

Light peels can be done every two to four weeks. Medium-depth peels like The Derma Peel are typically spaced every four to six weeks. Deep peels are once-yearly events because of their longer recovery.

A typical Derma Peel schedule

For most clients, results are best with a starting series of three to four peels spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance every three to four months. Your provider will personalize the plan at consultation.

Signs it's time for your next peel

  • Dullness returning
  • Uneven tone or dark spots resurfacing
  • Fine lines becoming more visible
  • Congestion or new breakouts
  • Rough or flaky texture

Maintaining results between sessions

The time between peels matters as much as the peel itself. Follow your post-care kit, avoid harsh exfoliants for at least a week, use SPF daily, keep skin hydrated, and don't pick at flaking skin.

Frequently asked

Are more peels always better?
No. Too many peels too close together can irritate the skin. Medium-depth peels need time between sessions to fully heal and rebuild.
Are peels safe for darker skin tones?
The Derma Peel is intended to be safe across Fitzpatrick types I–VI when performed by a trained professional. Suitability is always confirmed at consultation.
